The second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly election 2026 has begun early on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, from 7 am. Voting is taking place across 142 constituencies spread over Kolkata, Nadia, East Burdwan, Hooghly, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and Howrah. Alongside the high-stakes election, an emotional political campaign involving the family of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim has drawn public attention.
BJP candidate Ratna Debnath enters political spotlight
Ratna Debnath, a BJP candidate contesting from Panihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas, has emerged as prominent face in this election.
Her entry into politics gained national attention after the tragic 2024 incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. She is the mother of the victim in the case, which triggered widespread protests and renewed debate on women’s safety and justice in India.
During her campaign, she has repeatedly focused on justice and safety issues, especially concerning women.
This morning, Ratna Debnath said, “We will win, we will get justice. People will vote for us.”
Father of victim speaks with emotion before voting
Sekharranjan Debnath, the father of the victim, became emotional while speaking about casting his vote. He reflected on the painful journey the family has been through since the incident.
He said, “It’s very sad that we have to resort to this method to get justice for our girl. But we will win and get justice for our daughter… We are with the public…”
RG Kar case that shocked the nation
The case dates back to 9 August 2024, when a 31-year-old female postgraduate resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was raped and murdered. Her body was found inside a seminar room on the campus.
On 10 August 2024, police arrested a 33-year-old civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, who worked with the Kolkata Police, on suspicion of involvement in the crime.
Three days later, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), stating that the Kolkata Police investigation lacked credibility.
Following the incident, junior doctors across West Bengal went on 42-day strike demanding proper investigation and better hospital security. This case sparked widespread protests across India and also gained international attention.
